Because history deserves a slapshot, not a snooze.
Because history deserves a slapshot, not a snooze.
Guess who’s back? Yep—the nuttiest thing in hockey media. Brian T. Dessart dusted off the mic and brought back the #NHLNugget, your weekly ticket to history lessons that don’t feel like history class. The series first lit up Sports Illustrated’s digital screens for 225 straight episodes before hanging ’em up in 2019. But like a winger who “retired” only to sign a two-year deal in Switzerland, the Nugget couldn’t stay away. It stormed back in 2022 with its own platform, shinier graphics, and more swag than a rookie on draft night. Since then, it’s rolled with The Hockey News | Sports Illustrated (2023) and powered up to The Hockey News | Yahoo Sports in 2024.
Every week brings themes that hit harder than a blue-line slapshot: Milestone Monday, Wild Wednesday Rewind, and This Weekend’s Way Back When. Expect quick hits, heavy nostalgia, and maybe a chuckle or two along the way.
Oh—and meet the Nugget’s flashy sibling: #OlympicBiscuit. Launched on New Year’s Day 2023, it’s your all-access pass to the coolest Winter Olympics sport on earth. And yes, the biscuits are international—your official Olympic snack. Puck yeah.

Meet Brian T. Dessart — a 28-year journalist who dreamed up the #NHLNugget in 2016 with his then-SI producer, Mike. What began as a simple nightly tweet slowly morphed from keyboard to camera lens. Today, the series is still primarily filmed at Brian’s Long Island residence—where only the shirt you see on top really matters. Along the way, the Nugget has “traveled” to Arizona, Florida, Hawaii, North Carolina, Alberta, Ontario, Cuba, Iceland, and Italy. Since its reboot in February 2022, the series has racked up 3.6 million+ views and reached 2.3 million+ fans. Brian’s still fired up to keep delivering hockey’s quirkiest history lessons to the world.
Brian’s mantra? Just three words: “The nuttiness continues.” (Please don’t ask. He once took a hockey biscuit to the noggin. Hard.)
When he’s not in front of the camera, Brian can often be found bouncing around the scene in Miami Beach—though his off-duty life is just as unpredictable. He enjoys long walks across lava fields, synchronized somersaults at 36,000 feet, and meditating with primates in Central American rainforests. He also jams out to Justin Bieber—though, in his defense, “The Biebs” is a Leafs fan, so we’ll allow it.
And yes, in true Miami spirit, Brian firmly believes Pitbull should be added to the Hockey Hall of Fame … if only for services rendered to pregame playlists.
Oh, and in a plot twist stranger than a sun-eating plant in Little Shop of Horrors, Brian somehow ended up on Cameo. Sometimes it’s better not to ask questions.
